Naxos: Riverside Guided Trek (Small group experience)

Ce que vous allez faire

This long and varied route crosses the water-rich heart of central Naxos. It begins in Kourounochori, home to the impressive Somaripa–Fragopoulos Tower, one of the island’s oldest. The trail follows the old path toward Myloi, passing striking watermills set in a peaceful, green landscape.

Continuing in a gentle loop, the path runs beneath the remains of the ancient aqueduct and reaches Flerio, where visitors can explore the Sanctuary of the Springs and see the unfinished archaic kouroi at the nearby marble quarries (7th–6th century BC). From here, the route climbs gradually along a wide path toward the Potamia valley, passing well-preserved threshing floors and old lime kilns.

A stone-paved path leads into Ano Potamia, welcomed by its ancient, spring-fed water source. The three Potamia villages stand out for their well-preserved architecture, surrounded by watermills, chapels, towers, olive presses, and fertile land. Beyond Ano Potamia, the trail follows the river, either passing through Mesi Potamia or continuing along the riverbank, with both options meeting at the shaded spot of Platanaki, where a traditional stone washhouse survives. A short downhill detour at Lierado leads to the Kokkos Tower, overlooking the riverbed.

The walk ends in Kato Potamia, where the path returns to the river and fruit orchards. Nearby, at Episkopi, stands the historic domed church of Agios Mamas (Theoskepasti), known for its architecture, inscriptions, and preserved frescoes.

This is one of the most complete walks in Naxos.

Watermills, rivers, ancient quarries, living villages, and sacred sites appear one after another, creating a route that constantly changes in scenery and mood.

Ideal for travelers who want to understand how water shaped the land, the settlements, and everyday life of inland Naxos.
